DanceXchange (dx), together with Birmingham Hippodrome and Birmingham Royal Ballet, is part of the largest dance partnership in Britain.

We present a range of dance performances all year round in our studio theatre, The Patrick Centre; organise the month-long International Dance Festival Birmingham every two years; run over 50 classes a week in our studios; manage education and outreach projects both in Birmingham and across the West Midlands; and have our very own touring company, Bare Bones.

Committed to creating dance opportunities for young people of all abilities and cultural backgrounds, dx develops and presents outstanding performance work for children; nurtures gifted young people through its Centre for Advanced Training in South Asian and Contemporary Dance; and creates new and inspiring dance experiences for disadvantaged young people.

Case Study: Telford Find Your Talent Pathfinder

Making Choreographers is a three year project giving 10 young people from Telford the opportunities and experience to develop their own skills in choreography. Having come through a rigorous round of auditions, the group was formed in December 2008 and since then have taken part in day long master classes with 5 professional regional dance companies: Bare Bones, Motionhouse, Blue Eyed Soul, ACE dance & music and 2FaCeD DaNcE Company. They’ve also had a weekend residency choreographing solos with Bare Bones, which were then performed as curtain raisers during the 2 night run of Bare Bones 6 at RAF Cosford, and have had intensive workshops with Rosie Kay (as part of BBC Blast) and Bboy Sketch (as part of Breakin’ Convention).

“Being a 'making choreographer' is great, we have fantastic opportunities to show our talent and learn about being a choreographer. You learn different styles and techniques that help you along your way to being a better choreographer and it also gives you inspirations and ideas for dance.” Megan Fears (Making Choreographers participant, aged 14)
